2017?

I’ve got a slew of little marriageverse short fics in progress and no clue which one to work on finishing first.

1. The one where Ella wanders off into the woods.

2. The one where Sephiroth wakes up handcuffed to the bedpost.

3. The one where Aeris deals with parenting anxieties.

4. The one where Sephiroth finds something odd between the couch cushions.

5. The one where Sephiroth finds something even odder on his desk at work.

6. The one where Sephiroth brings home The Dog.

7. The one where Sephiroth brings home a boy (Guardians).

8. The one where Ella goes to the prom.

9 The one where Sephiroth has to race the twins to the emergency room.

10. The one where Aeris starts university.

These, plus three epic length fics, a long story arc about Ella quitting ballet and taking up another hobby before the stage calls her back, another one about Aeris becoming the Planet's premiere expert on Lifestream phenomena and Ancient Culture, the twins growing apart and Sephiroth growing comfortably old. Some days I look at the outline file and my head hurts so much I take up my embroidery instead. :/ And this isn't even counting the endgame fic.

I've become a sad, annoying little person who talks more about my plans and goals instead of actually accomplishing them. What a joke.

Title: Above and Below
Characters: Aeris/Sephiroth
Rating: T
Words: 1030
Summary: Sephiroth and Aerith pretend that they met while Midgar still stood, when he was a powerful General and she was a pretty girl below the plate.
Contents: Roleplay - Power dynamics, exploitation, survival sex.
Notes: Set after Path and its eventual sequel, but before the Marriageverse. In the 'dating' period, essentially. Plenty as yet unexplained about the world and relationships around them, but this is for them alone.

Working on a marriageverse one-shot that got a little more plotful than the three drabble ideas that merged to create it. Here's a bit:

***

Sephiroth shrugged and focused his gaze on his daughter. She stared right back at him, as always, eyes seeking him out the way her infant mind did whenever she was awake. “We made a beautiful baby, Aer. I know every parent probably says this, but she really is the prettiest baby ever.”

“Of course you’d say that,” Aeris muttered from her pillows. “She looks just like you.”

“Then you know I’m being honest.”

“And vain.” Aeris kicked him through the sheets.

One of the things I hate about the way I write is how I labor over every word and crank things out as slow as a snail. But that's not the topic today. One of the things I LOVE about the way I write is how my brain figures everything out while I've got my back turned doing other things. It might be like this for other people but I've never asked around. There was quite a drastic slow down in consciously plotting these past few years, completely expected under the circumstances. Apparently, somewhere in the back of the brain, something was cooking and these past few months there's been an explosion of everything back there coming to the fore.

The Jackalope fic? Outlined, begun, and tying in with Path and the Marriageverse in an unexpectedly epic way. Path's eventual sequel? Shaping up and actually making more sense. Even the 'End Of It All' story that comes at the end of the happy interlude of the marriageverse fics, the whole thing has begun to fit together in my head in the best of ways. While I was off getting a degree, my subconscious created a beautiful monster. I love my little AU-verse! :3

To deal with that thing I hate about the way I write, I'm going to try like hell to reach at least 500 words a day. It's not much, some days I might get more, hopefully never less, but something done is better than nothing. The main things might not see daylight till they're complete but no more distraction fics.

I was in the middle of Chapter Two in the Path rewrite, doing something about the very stiff and formal way I phrased everything back then, when one thing made me think of another thing, which in turn led to another other thing, which birthed the plotbunny for a prequel. In the course of minutes that plotbunny achieved full blown jackalope status and has been prodding me with its horns ever since. I haven't been this fevered up about a fic since the early days of Path itself, when my approach was too rigid to be effective about it.

It's a good plot, or at least I'm properly hooked by this harpoon my brain has tossed at me. It's disturbingly complete already, going from start to finish in my head in half an hour, clear as day. I'm going to write it. If I don't it will haunt me. I'm trying to be smart about it this time, creating a solid outline from start to finish before I type a word. It's a bit more like writing-as-work than writing-as-fun, but I can afford to prioritize completion now rather than pure stress relief. The actual process is a bit faster when I have a framework to go from.

I expect that like the Path rewrite, it won't see the light of day until it's all done. I don't want to get stuck in WIP land again, and approaching things like a complete draft is good for maintaining coherence. I don't know what this will mean for deliberately meandering, lighter fics like The Mission, or Paint The Town, or all those other ideas I had on the To Do list. Maybe I'll post chapters in between, when the drama of these other two becomes too much. Forgive me, fandom. I'll be here forever, apparently, but I'll try not to take that long.

Edit: And the outline is done. Six long or twelve average chapters, plus prologue and epilogue.

For the next six months I was going to work hard and play hard, finish Path, including the retooling, maybe do something serious with these flip-side ideas I keep having, where one plot idea wants to be dealt with in two very different ways. 'Fly Away' and 'New Life' were one such pair. There's one pair I'm calling 'Ghost in the attic' for now, and another that's been on my To-Do list as AeriSeph-Wutai Connection for years. I was going to set aside time for quilting and embroidery, and recover from the stomach ulcer, the saccades, diplopia, eyestrain, migraines, stress rash, cracked lips and thankfully reversible stage tooth decay (from drinking oversweetened strong tea and coffee and passing out on the books without brushing the sugar away).

But seems despite all the symptoms, the last month and a half went better than I thought it would. Today I had paperwork to fill out and was able to do this for the very first time:
Form
So I get two weeks and then I have to go do that. Oh life, forever getting in the way of fandom.
