A Sort of Apology.

I feel I owe everyone who's read anything I've written for the past week or so a rather profound and massive apology. Unfortunately, the best you're getting at the moment is an explanation.

Lengthy stuff under fold )

So, apologies for the rather frequent brainos I've been having over the past week. I will try to do better, but first I need to get my brain back...

40 Day Anime Meme - Day 34

34 -- have you ever watched an anime only because you liked a specific character?

As in, only hung on because I really wanted to know what happened to one of the cast? Or started watching something because of one character (like I'd seen art or something and was curious)?

Sure. Isn't that sort of how it works sometimes? If it's not a stellar premise but a character has an interesting design or something, I'll check it out. And then there's usually some reason to keep going... I can think of more games that I've finished for a character or two compared to anime... But I definitely know where there were times that the plot was a mess or fell off and I kept going because of an attachment or curiousity about the cast. I think that's pretty natural.

I'm quite fond of the whole things, now, but... the first time through Tekkaman Blade II was pretty painful until all of a sudden Dead End showed up and wait, what-? and I would have watched another fifty episodes to see how that was going to play out.

40 Day Anime Meme - Day 33

kalloway: Sayla looking back over her shoulder (Gundam Sayla FTB)
33 -- would you ever watch an anime with over 100 episodes?

I think [personal profile] taichara already gave my answer-- wtf, meme writer and I have and I'll do it again, though sometimes there's a question of time, not inclination.

I wonder if the person who wrote these questions knows there's been an anime series airing weekly since 1969... Now that's a lot of episodes.
megpie71: AC Tifa Lockheart looking at camera, very determined (Pissed off)
Am I odd because I tend to see things like the Damore memo (the "Google manifesto", the thing which got James Damore sacked from Google for creating an unfriendly work environment) and the Charlotteville terrorism as being manifestations of the same principle?

The principle being "The only Real Human Beings are white men".

As a woman (and a person with a disability) I tend to find this somewhat frightening. I find it more frightening when people treat all of this as some kind of intellectual exercise, rather than the very real attempt at dehumanisation, at objectification and at rationalisation for actual violence it is. As a woman who would have had to fight to have her very humanity recognised a century ago, I find this reversion to a perceived historical mean to be deeply frightening. I can't imagine how upsetting it must be for people of colour in the USA, and for indigenous people here in Australia to be seeing this.

We need to speak up. We need to speak out. We need to oppose this principle in all its manifestations - in the supposedly "civil" ones like the Damore "memo" (query: how "civil" is a multiple page ramble which boils down to "I am not willing to behave in a respectful way toward a large number of my co-workers and managers because I don't think they're Real Human Beings like me, and I strongly believe I shouldn't have to work alongside them"?); in the virulently obvious ones like the Charlotteville march. In all its manifestations, in every space (including the police forces, the public service, the private sector and the rhetoric of our politicians) we need to oppose this principle, because we have seen what happens when it is allowed to run free. We have seen it in so many different circumstances - in the extermination camps of Germany; in the slavery of the American South; in the so-called "off-shore processing" camps on Nauru and Manus Island; in the Intervention; in the massacres down through the ages; in the Trail of Tears; in all the little slings and arrows of colonialism, of racism, of sexism. We know this principle is socially toxic.

So why do we keep allowing people to spout it as though firstly, it's something new and radical, and secondly, as though it's a valid point of view?

40 Day Anime Meme - Day 32

kalloway: (Gundam Char FTB)
32 -- if you could make a game for an anime of your choice, what would it be and why?

Not for a single anime, but at one point I was working on a yaoi-themed Fluxx deck with characters from anime, games, etc. I don't know whatever happened to all of my notes or rough cards (good thing with Fluxx - you can just use index cards), but I had hoped to eventually finish it to play at a Yaoicon some year. (whoops)

I'm now sort of wrongly tempted to try to finish it... if I can remember how it began.

(The problem is play-testing, I think. I don't have a lot of IRL friends I'd necessarily subject to that...)

kalloway: (Athrun Epic Facepalm)
31 -- have you ever watched an anime with over 23 episodes?

That is such a weird number to choose, considering a large percentage of series are 24-26 episodes, if not more. I know shorter 12-13 episode series are becoming more common (or at least it feels that way), but...

...

For a long time, other than with OVAs, I'd be surprised if something was only 12-13 episodes long.

30 -- how many anime episodes is 'ideal' for you?

Exactly as many as it takes to tell the story competently.

In the case of adaptations, as many as it takes to tell the story competently without gratuitous filler (arcs), removing or highly truncating arcs, and to keep a decent sort of pacing without the middle falling out.

I do wish Tekkaman Blade II had been about twice its length, though.

Dear Brain (IV)

megpie71: AC Tifa Lockheart looking at camera, very determined (Give me the chocolate & nobody dies)
Dear Brain,

Yes, okay, I was stupid today. This is not a reason to haul out the Failure Tapes and play them in full 3D and surround sound in the main auditorium of the Grand Ol' Embarrassing Recollection. Even if it were a reason to do so, we know, through extensive experimentation over the last forty-six years, hideous embarrassment and post-facto regret do not serve the same function as a time machine and make stupid things never have happened.

It will, however, make me feel very inclined toward things like opening up my own skull and removing you, piece by piece, using an ice cream scoop.

Extremely sincerely,

Meg

40 Day Anime Meme - Day 29

kalloway: (Xmas Lights 3 Cluster)
29 -- has an anime's fanbase ever made you hesitant to watch an anime?

Absolutely, and this doesn't just apply to anime - it applies to books, games, movies, etc.

But it's fairly prevalent with the mecha genre, which is heavily grog-infested. I rather vehemently refused to have anything to do with Robotech for yeaaaars because of large swathes of the fandom. But I'm getting better/more comfortable at separating things from their fandoms and knowing when to enjoy something but never mention online that I like it/didn't like it/am remotely aware of it/once walked by a copy in the store.

You know, as you do.

40 Day Anime Meme - Day 28

Aug. 9th, 2017 04:36 pm[personal profile] kalloway
kalloway: (GS Astray Girls Asagi)
28 -- do you watch a new anime because you think it will be good, or because its popular?

I feel like these questions are on a mission to get stupider or at least more obtuse every day. I watch new anime because it looks interesting/is in a genre I like/is from a creator I like/was recommended to me. To me, 'good' and 'interesting' don't always go together. Some of my favorite series are utter trainwrecks at times, and so? And popularity... I'm probably more likely to check out really popular things just because I hear the names more/people rec the series more and I'm more aware of it, but... that's about it. Like, I watched Yuri!! on Ice because there was a big hype but I just thought it was okay.

I guess the best thing to say is - I watch things that seem to be in my wheelhouse, even though sometimes my wheelhouse changes or has odd niches that nobody knew about, sometimes even me.

40 Day Anime Meme - Day 26

kalloway: (Fafner 2)
26 -- you get to have [1] anime character as your waifu/husbando in real life, who do you choose?

...my number one and likely only real husbando is from manga, so... *sigh* And then the next handful of options are from games. I do still have a random framed picture of Brera Sterne from Macross Frontier on top of a cabinet, so I guess I'll go with him.

(And yet the urge to re-do this meme with manga or games or something is shrinking so quickly... I'm not sure I could deal with most of these questions again.)

40 Day Anime Meme - Day 25

Aug. 6th, 2017 07:18 pm[personal profile] kalloway
kalloway: (Gundam Char FTB)
25 -- what is an anime you regret watching?

I've watched a lot of regrettable hentai over the years.

Also, I just didn't like Kujibiki Unbalance and think it should have stayed a meta!Genshiken thing. I guess that'd be my choice.

Hmm... I feel like I should have more commentary but I guess I don't?

Build Fighters Dub

[personal profile] kalloway: Oh gods, I put in Build Fighters, after poking the corpse awake, and there's a dub. And it's hilaribad~
[personal profile] taichara: ohgawd X3~
[personal profile] kalloway: I need to find a cast list. Reiji sounds familiar, but no one else so far
[personal profile] taichara: the interwebs seems allergic to one
[personal profile] kalloway: "Nozomi Entertainment presented the Blu-ray cover of their North American release of Gundam Build Fighters on May 4, 2016 on various social networks, mentioning that their release will include both English and Japanese audio with English subtitles. Later, they stated on Twitter that the dub is a Hong Kong dub, it is likely this is the same dub that aired in the Philippines as many English dubs of anime airing in Southeast Asia (such as the dub of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ) are in fact recorded in Hong Kong."
[personal profile] kalloway: So there may be no official credited cast.
[personal profile] kalloway: Also, that explains some of the horrible--
[personal profile] taichara: lololololololol
[personal profile] taichara: yuuuup ~
[personal profile] kalloway: Reiji sounds, like, thirty, and Sei sounds like a 5yo girl
[personal profile] taichara: AGE DIFFERENCE OHNOES lolololololol
[personal profile] kalloway: *expires*

kalloway: Kaoru from Rurouni Kenshin tinted purple (RuroKen Kaoru Purple)
24 -- name [1] anime you wish everyone would watch

Admittedly, my first thought was 'what absolutely horrible, ancient ova should I torture everyone with?' and that's probably everything wrong with this meme-- I mean, chances are even if I came up with something, it's probably still something I like and other people would like. Because anime doesn't just have one genre, everyone has their own tastes, etc.

It's like asking 'what one video game do you wish everyone would play?' and yeah...

Hmm. I wish everyone would watch the one anime that makes them happiest.

Weekly Update 05 AUG 2017

megpie71: Animated "tea" icon popular after London bombing. (Default)
Short one this week. My main computer, Orac, is making hideous grinding noises each time I try to start him this morning (I suspect he needs to have his innards cleaned of any dust - a job I'd do myself if it weren't for the fact we don't have a fine enough Phillips head screwdriver in the house to be able to shift the screws of his casing). So I've put in requests with various tech groups to get the job done, and I'm waiting on one of them to get into contact with me. Which may, I suspect, not happen until Monday. (Minor update: Orac will be picked up by the nice person found through Nearby Nerds at around 12 - 12.30 today, and should be fixed up by Sunday. All to the good).

In the meantime I'm using my university notebook, Elfadunk. While Elfadunk is ideal for the things I purchased her for (taking notes, downloading university readings, being portable from home to uni and back again) she is less than ideal as a full-time machine. For one thing, she's only got a 32GB hard drive, which is mostly occupied at present with holding Windows 10 and MS Office, and can't handle much more than than that. While I can fit a semester's worth of notes and readings on her for two units, after the end of semester I have to clear things off to fit the next semester's batch of stuff on there.

So at present I'm letting Elfadunk fill in for Orac as much as she can (she is NOT a gaming machine in the least) while I wait for the nice young man who's going to fix up Orac to arrive.

22 -- you get to have a harem of [6] anime characters of your choice, who do you choose?

Okay, how many of the housecritters are actually from anime? Do they count if they come from a game with an anime adaptation? Should I just list everyone anyway? (That'd be more than six, though?)

There's a lot of video game housecritters...

Um... I guess I should just grab some people from the ether... So it's a mix of housecritters aand some wishful thinking~

1. Seadragon Kanon
2. Athrun Zala
3. Char Aznable
4. Akio Ohtori
5. Tear Grants
6. Sync & Ion
