Fic: Stars and Stones; Pulse.
Title: Stars and Stones.
Characters: Ifalna, Aeris, Sephiroth, Jenova.
Prompt: 048: Diamond
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 188
Summary: Ifalna talks to Aeris in the labs.
The stars have a special shine. They flicker in the night like a fire. Nothing on this earth is so beautiful. Where could you ever hope to get close to such a shining?
Oh, true, there's something in this earth called 'diamond', rare and troublesome and terribly unimpressive at first. It takes so much work to find one and then even more to shape and cut and polish it right, but it is almost like a star. There is a little fire there, when the light hits it right.
But it's not a star. It's not a living flame. It's a cold, dead rock that had to be buffed to its shine so it could be worn on a finger. It will never be a star. Yes, sometimes stars do fall and perhaps there will be something of that shine in what's left.
A star fell once a long time ago. There was too much shine left in it. A star's glimmer is a terrible thing up close. You have to turn it into a diamond, lock it in hard crystal to catch all the fire so it won't burn you up. And even so it is beautiful.
That's the trouble with diamonds, you see. Even though they never look like much far beneath the ground, there's always someone who can figure what they will look like all carved and polished, and to put a price on them that's far too high. A star's shine is a living thing and it's not meant to live here. Better to leave it a rough diamond deep below, undisturbed.
It might be too late for that, I fear. Someone has been deep within this planet and a diamond like that is too much to resist. Perhaps it's too much for them to handle safely. It's too large and unwieldy for certain. Big gems like that always get cut into smaller ones that are easier to handle.
They've begun to carve their tiny pieces off already, I'm certain. No doubt the smaller one will be lighter and no less beautiful. Let's hope they remember, child, that all diamonds cut, harder and sharper than everything around them, no matter their size.
Title: Pulse
Characters: Sephiroth, Aeris.
Prompt: 069: Thunder
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 188
A pulse is an easy thing to hear, if one knows how to listen and where. Train your ears towards the throat or to a wrist, places where the blood runs close to the surface. You'll find it there, a soft rushing sound.
A pulse is something you can feel if you put your hands to those soft places. Let your fingers linger and you can almost reach through and touch it, a racing rhythm to complement that quickening heartbeat you hear.
A pulse is something you can see if you dare to make a cut. Light ones, mere scratches, and the red will step out with a steady beat, welling up and beading on the skin, filling the air with that metallic tang.
And when you have a sword right there, holding it at the heart of all pulse, what you feel along the blade and what you scent through her dress will reverberate and magnify. It will move along a length of metal right up to your fingers for you to feel, and almost taste. And then the mad pounding you hear will be quickly still.
