One beer, last on the ship. Take it now or take it later.

Cid shut the fridge door with a grunt and stood there in the dark. One beer wouldn't do much to take the edge off and he'd have to land somewhere in the daylight hours to stock up anyway. He opened the fridge one more time, mulling it over, then shut the door again to stand listening in the dark.

The fridge hummed mechanical harmony with the standalone freezer next to it, counterpoint with the muted sound of the engines. Cid knew these night sounds. There was nothing now to interrupt them and they weren't loud enough to drown out screams. Everything sounded normal. It was not reassuring.

Cid was reaching into his pocket for a smoke when a door slammed up above. Cid jerked, tensing as footsteps raced towards him. “Shit,” he growled into the dark. He'd left his spear in his cabin and the madman was loose again.

Aeris bolted into the kitchen with her nightgown askew and Sephiroth hot on her heels. Cid reached behind himself for the knife block on the counter. Light flooded the room again as Aeris flung the fridge open and grabbed the beer.

“Aeris,” Sephiroth warned.

“Nnngh!” Aeris grunted at him. She pulled the tab and started chugging. Sephiroth sighed and with a slight glance to their audience, tied a loose knot to close his robe. Aeris finished half the can before she sputtered. “Ech!”

“If you don't like that you shouldn't have it,” Sephiroth said.

“I have to do something to get that taste out of my mouth.” Aeris set the can down on the counter, chest heaving.

Sephiroth sighed. “I told you, you don't have to swallow.”

“Right,” Aeris scoffed, “and let you keep thinking about getting it better from someone else.”

“I don't think about-”

“Yeah, yeah, so you say,” Aeris brushed him off. She grabbed him by the wrist to march him out of the kitchen. “I'm still going to keep practicing till I can do you right!”

“Uh, okay,” Sephiroth conceded and let himself be led away.

Cid was feeling around desperately for his lighter when Aeris came flying back in. “Might need this,” she mumbled, snapping the open beer can up from the counter.

Cid watched her go then headed straight for the vodka.
