Sephiroth waited outside the door while the boy packed. He knew he didn't have long. Dorm kids usually didn't have much on them. Sephiroth stole a glance inside the door as he hit the speed dial.

“Seph?” Aeris answered.

“I'm heading home in a short while,” Sephiroth said, “and I thought I should give you advanced warning.”

“Oh, the horror!” Aeris began. Sephiroth heard her laughter but only saw a boy clearing framed photos into a dufflebag. “Should I be putting extra materia in my staff?” Aeris continued, sussing out the nature of the 'warning'. “Or tequila on the table? Or strawberry lubri-”

“Not any of that,” Sephiroth murmured. “I'm bringing someone with me.”

“Oh,” Aeris said, “So you've picked up a young blonde and want me to make nice and pretend everything's going to be just fine?”

Sephiroth blinked and tore his eyes away from Ocean. He could almost see Aeris' smile but her tendencies were eerie at times. “Well, yes, actually.”Sephiroth hazarded one more look in the door. Ocean was struggling with the zipper, blond spikes bouncing.

“Seriously?”

“A junior cadet. Pilot parents.” There was no need to say more.

“I'll get the guest room ready, then,” Aeris said, her tone taking only a slight downturn, warm with understanding this time. Sephiroth murmured his love, then stood staring at his phone after he ended the call.

“I'm ready, Sir.”

Sephiroth blinked. The kid was quiet, or maybe subdued. Sephiroth nodded an affirmative, his signal to follow.

The car ride was quiet. Sephiroth noted with silent approval that Ocean buckled himself in without being told. It was just past rush hour and the traffic was mostly gone. Sephiroth took his usual route through the restaurant strip where the crowd was used to him. He didn't warrant senseless gawking there anymore, especially since he stopped there often anyway.

He spared a glance at the blond boy as he rounded a corner. The windows had only a mild tint and his guest would be noticeable. If the paparazzi felt daring today maybe they would just take the boy for Cloud.

Sephiroth slowed at a traffic light, coming to the buttery soft stop he had developed while driving with a 'Baby on Board' sign in the back. He kept his eyes on the light, tapping one toe on the pedal.

A little prickle in his mind was his warning but the flash came too soon. “Hell!” he swore, and glared out the window, but the photographer was already running. “Speak of the devil,” Sephiroth grumbled, watching him go. “Sorry about that,” he said to Ocean. “I've learned to live with it, but...” But what? The kid didn't need that now, for sure, but Sephiroth didn't feel like bringing up the raw and obvious.

“It's okay, sir.” The kid finally lifted his head, smiling weakly. “Maybe they'll just take me for Strife.”

Sephiroth blinked down at the kid and nodded slowly. “Maybe.” The light turned green. “Still,” Sephiroth said, pulling out, “I should have warned you.”

“It's no big deal, sir, really. I mean, I got my picture taken with the General!”

Sephiroth almost laughed. “I guess you did.” The kid's smile was a little bigger now. Bouncing back quick. Good. This one was going to be fine.
