The current sparked as it swirled around them. Zack felt Aerith's fingers threading through his own. Two more streams joined the first, intertwining, tangling and coalescing in the air. Aerith uttered a little cry and reached for the errant coils.
They came to her willingly, threading through her hair and down her arms. “There,” she whispered, “It's okay. Nothing will hurt you here.” The swirls quiesced, settling against her chest, as yet unable to disperse and join the Planet's greater flow.
Zack reached out but stopped short of petting the form, though it now curled in Aerith's lap like an overgrown cat. “This is... him?”
Aerith nodded. “It's them, all three, and him, yes.”
Zack exhaled. “So can he join the lifestream now?”
Aerith shook her head. “Not yet. There are still traces... Well, one more lifetime should do the trick.”
Zack blinked, thinking it over. “Where can we possibly send him, though? Where he won't be hurt? Where that anger can't grow?”
“We'll find a place for him. He deserves at least one chance that's free of pain.”
Zack shook his head. “Life is pain, Aer, even if you get a good one.” Zack should know. He'd had one of the best. “What if he remembers too much? Will it set him off again?”
“It's a risk,” Aerith admitted, “but in the proper hands, with good guidance, with real love this time, I'm sure he can learn better ways to handle it.”
Zack scratched his head. “But just who do you trust to do right by him? Who can protect him from everything and protect everything from him?” Aerith's lips said nothing but her eyes said plenty. “Oh, no! Aerith, no! He's suffered enough!”
“So has this one,” Aerith said sadly, looking down and the mass of blue-green tendrils flowing over and around her. “He won't know outright what happened before but his spirit will remember. He'll need someone who can understand.”
Zack rolled his eyes. “You do what's best, Aerith.”
“Don't I always?” The Cetra smirked. She lifted the strands of mako upwards, bending low to offer gentle guidance. “Be nice to Tifa, now, and don't give Cloud too much trouble.”
“Yeah,” Zack cut in, “because he's still a country boy. If you misbehave, he'll spank ya good.”
“Hush, Zack.” Aerith elbowed him and guided the mako to the Lifestream's edge. “Be good, Seph,” she whispered, casting him to Gaia's grace. “I'll be waiting.”
