For a very long time I've been extremely wary about talking about non-fandom aspects of my life online. It's only been in the past six months or so that I've noticed the old anxiety finally wearing off. Then LJ goes and does this.

I have very good reasons, like many of us do, for keeping my fandom life separate from all the rest of it. Please don't post anything you see on this journal to FB and Twitter. I'm getting that Greasemonkey script as I type.

Why on earth would they do this?

It reminds me of Strikethrough. It seemed like a decision an intern made and no one was there to supervise. This has the same vibe.

Or that Google Buzz thing that sent Gmail crazy a while back. Look, techies, out here we value our anonymity and ability to disconnect from contact at will, unsavory or otherwise. I don't know if they grasp how serious being tracked down online can be for many of us.

I am really NOT appreciating this addition. I'm adding a note to everybody... sometimes I really freaking hate LJ. This isn't cool.

I'll never post anything of yours to facebook or twitter, and I hope to figure out how I can permanently lock my accounts from that being allowed to happen.

This might be what you need. Unfortunately I don't think it will work on the Basic account I've been perfectly happy with for years, so I might have to contemplate finally upgrading and forcing people to deal with ads on my journal. Not happy here.

I was planning on re-activating my paid membership, so I guess I'll definitely have to do it now... Alas... I really fucking hate this thing. I spend so much of my time keeping each of my internet sides away from one another that the idea of overlap makes me way too nervous.

All that new comfort I was gaining with non-fandom posts is frittering away. I hope LJ gets the picture quickly and fixes this mess.

Yah, that is the shame of it. I'll have to redo my own layout to use it.

On the upside, it is fairly easy to block ads with Firefox and AdBlock. Even with Internet Explorer, you can use InPrivate Filtering to get rid of ads.

This is not the time I would have chosen to have to fiddle with what I have nearly no understanding of. Darn LJ. At least Firefox has been good so far, better for me than Chrome.

If you want a new layout with little hassle, [livejournal.com profile] premade_ljs is a great place to go. However, some of their newer layouts don't have previews any more. Which sucks.

But there is also [livejournal.com profile] freelayouts for more options, but it hasn't been updated in a year. D:

I was thinking about the snowflake one. It's blue enough to maintain some sense of continuity for my brain until there's time to tweak.

That would be cute. I'm going to have to figure out what I'm going to do for a new one. I'm sure it will be a chore. :/

I suppose it will finally be a chance to fangirl out this journal of mine at some point. I've wanted to before but not badly enough to squeeze out the time and energy to learn how.

I've disabled the Pingback feature but I don't know if that's good enough. What is this Greasemonkey script of which you speak?

Date: 2010-09-02 01:32 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] animekittysama.livejournal.com
Pingback is something rather different - it alerts you if someone is linking to a post you made. Personally, I consider that to be useful - I want to know if someone is linking to my posts either on or off LJ.

(sorry there, just had to comment)

Man, I am getting way too old for this $#!+. Darn you kids and your social networking.

Ah, but pingback only works on public posts, not locked posts for guess what?

security reasons.

This thing gets rid of the ticky box options for FB and Twitter under your 'Post Comment' box so you'll never accidently crosspost anything yourself or get irritated by their very presence.

Date: 2010-09-02 01:43 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] karadin.livejournal.com
This is much faster

If you want to remove this option from your comment boxes you can get the information in this post by saifai.
http://saifai.livejournal.com/285517.html

thank you animekittysama!

(I am still seeing the facebook and twitter boxes on your journal now)

The Greasemonkey code just works for you as you're veiwing Livejournal, to make it so you can't use the repost function. It doesn't remove the option from your journal so that no one can repost. You have remove that option through CSS.

I tried. Like I said higher up, it looks like I might need to upgrade from my Basic account to get that to work.

Shes working on another fix, I think.

I've been really loathe to link my facebook account to here, even though it has a fake name and a Vincent Valentine as the Icon and tbh, this is why. I feel for you.

I never linked mine but I like my journal material at my journal, not out in that privacy-mess that is Facebook. I never even linked my Twitter, which IS a fandom account.

Huh. I am wondering who this is supposed to be helping, and why LJ has such a limited understanding of its own market.

I thought people who blogged and wanted it as public as possible tended to go for blog sites that (theoretically) pay for the advertising space. Most of the LJ users I know want this for their private/semi-private kinkfest journal.

LJ's main concern became the people they sell ad space to a long time ago, I'm afraid.

Has done some interesting experiments with what the new LJ can and cannot do...

Ugh, LJ...honestly, if something from my journal wound up on facebook I'd die. I hate FB and basically only use it for keeping up with RL friends, I don't see a need for this repost option at all.

It makes them the moolah, I think that's the only point.

Sad but true. I get that they need to make money, but still...of all sites, it had to be FB. >>;
