“It's easier this way, I guess,” Zack said, watching the three young men wrestle in the field. He was almost used to them now, their being and not being Sephiroth.
“What is?” Aeris asked.
“Having kids. Raising a family. I mean, there's no labor pains this way.”
“I guess.” Aeris gave him a lazy smile. “That part never did sound pleasant.”
“And then there's diapers, and toilet training.” Zack tensed as Loz tossed Kadaj twenty feet away and relaxed when the smaller one rolled and came up laughing. “Terrible twos, colic, teething.”
“Oh, Kadaj still has a baby tooth,” Aeris put in. “A molar way in the back started rattling the other day.”
Zack frowned. “Does the tooth fairy exist in the lifestream?”
“No, but parents do.”
Zack let Aeris put a lily wreath on his head and tilt it to an angle that suited him. The remnants were practicing handstands in a tall column now, Loz as the base, Kadaj on top and Yazoo a perpetual middle child. Zack grinned and gave them a thumbs up. They were and were not his children, and he was getting used to that too.
Title: ReBirthday

He counted it as a point in his favor, even if it was a small one, that he didn't jump out of his body when they hit him with the surprise. There were balloons and noisemakers and streamers and hats. He tried to dodge that last one but Aeris wasn't having it. It was his party so he had to wear a hat. There were days he really hated what Aeris could do with mako.
“Now, how old am I supposed to be?” he asked, eying the forest of candles he had to blow out.
Zack shrugged. “Dunno. Hundred and forty, maybe. I think people stop counting when you're dead.”
“So why are we having a birthday party when there's nothing but dead people here?”
Aeris came up behind him and slid her arms around his shoulders. “You were due. Didn't have too many of these when you were alive.”
“I suppose not. But why today? It's not my actual birthday, is it? Even I wasn't sure when that was.”
Zack and Aeris shared a glance. “Today is the day you came to live with us, Seph.”
“Yeah, you know.” Zack scratched the back of his head. “When Cloud put you down for good.”
Sephiroth stared into the fire of a hundred burning wicks, all smokeless, just a wish of the lifestream, but good enough. He took a deep breath and blew them all out. Zack whooped. “Way to go, man!”
Sephiroth sat back, pleased. “So,” he said to his afterlife companions, “I'm supposed to get cake and kisses now, I believe.”
