Turning that last corner now, finish line getting close, I can feel it! Here's a couple turn-of-year type ficlets.
Title: Stolen
Characters: Sephiroth/Aeris, Zack/Aeris.
Prompt: Christmas
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 239
It was a chance meeting under mistletoe at a Solstice party. They were masked and he didn't know her name. She must have known his, of course. His hair was too hard to hide. The SOLDIERs whooped and cheered as he leaned down for a chaste brushing of the lips. He turned slightly to hide the motion, because it was a barrack party, only SOLDIERs and guests. She was somebody's girl. She tensed slightly at his touch and he froze. “I would have gone for your cheek if your mask allowed,” he said, and she smiled at him.
It was chance again when he found her outside, twirling her mask in her hands. He had come seeking air and didn't find it, because her face stole his breath away. The stare they shared went beyond reasonable bounds. He refused to move, or was unable to. “I should go in,” she said, looking aside. She made to tie her feathered mask back on. He caught her by the wrist and had her against the wall. It was anything but chaste this time. There were no prying eyes, and certainly she had a man, but inside, not watching her.
She didn't resist, didn't throw herself at him. She melted slightly, as he did, rising to meet him. It was over quickly (too quickly) and she was leaving. Her fingertips lingered last in his grasp when her eyes were already turned away.
Title: Dance of the Dragon
Characters: Sephiroth, Aeris
Prompt: 095: New Year
Rating: PG
Word Count: 157
There were dragons in Wutai. Not the coarse, lumbering things from the continents, but graceful ones, long and sinuous, shimmering and wise. These weren't beasts on the rampage, fit only for slaughter. They were kings, masters, gods.
Aeris took the high ground so she could see the dance. The dragons down below were supported by sticks, colored with paint and moved by men, but they were still beautiful. They were as bright as the sun, and graceful and wild. They floated and turned and swirled just like the real ones might, welcoming the turn of the world.
Someone whispered from behind her. “Have you found the ninja girl yet?”
She turned and saw a dragon's eyes, aquamarine, slit-pupiled, aglow. She stepped backwards but there was nowhere to go.
“You should be careful up here,” he said. His smile was more teeth than joy and his advance was steady and slow. “These are dragons' caves. You never know when one might get hungry.”

I am in much agreement with white_jenna that this would be a beautiful picture... black and red, you say? :flutter:
